Why will power doesn’t work

Why do we find it so hard to get motivated, even when we know that what we want to do will benefit us ? How many of us have started New Year’s resolutions with the best intentions but then have struggled to maintain focus and momentum? There is a little trick I use almost every day to create positive energy, move forward and get stuff done, and it requires no will power at all.

But why isn’t it just a case of find the motivation and get the work done? Put our mind to it and do it. Our brains are clever but sometimes we trick ourselves up and create obstacles and aversions. We are too clever for our own good. There are always pay offs for not doing the work that our brains are more than happy to accept thank you.

But luckily there is a really simple way to bypass the brain and ensure that time and time again you move to doing things that are beneficial for you rather than not. It’s a great anti-procrastinating tool!

If you struggle to get something done, no matter how big or small, simply ask yourself the question: how can I make my future self happy?

That way, it becomes more like a favor than a task and a favor is easier to do than a task. Most of the time, you know deep down that you will feel better for doing it, so tap into that positive feeling and go for it!

Just ask yourself, will my future me thank me for doing this task/action/chore now? 9/10 your future self will be extremely pleased that present you pulled their finger out and just did the thing. It can be extra powerful if future you then thanks past you for the work – reinforce that behaviour loop! Remember, positive energy will always move you forward.

I guarantee this will be a life changer – momentum builds momentum.
